About Our Law Firm

AN ATTORNEY WHO CARES
ABOUT US

David Johnson

Hello. I’m David H. Johnson. I have been working with individuals in legal trouble for the last 35 years. During this time I’ve learned a lot about the people in northern Colorado. In particular, I’ve realized people charged with crimes are generally good people. It’s the bad choice that got them in trouble. Solve this issue and clients are able to find their success to move forward.

I began my career in 1986 where I served as a deputy district attorney in the 8th Judicial District in Larimer County, Colorado. After gaining extensive experience prosecuting criminal cases, I began my own private practice in 1993. My law practice focuses on criminal defense and personal injury law. In 1995, I became a shareholder at Liggett, Johnson and Goodman, P.C. Our law firm is just two blocks from the beautiful Colorado State University campus on Canyon and Whitcomb, just north of Mulberry Street.

A good trial attorney possesses the skills of negotiation and trial savvy. With extensive knowledge and training in negotiation and my years of trial experience, I am in the perfect position to help you when you’re facing criminal charges. I understand your case is unique. The facts and circumstances of your case are important in preparing your defense. By learning these factors I can effectively assist you with your legal needs. As a compassionate advocate, I will work tirelessly as we strive to reach a successful outcome.

In my free time I enjoy relaxing in nature. From going on hikes with my dog, Nelson, doing chores with my wife, Jill on our farm, or practicing Kundalini yoga, it is always nice to get grounded in all the beauty Colorado has to offer.

An Advocate For You

I realize we all make bad choices from time to time. At times it may feel that life is not fair. Maybe you did something without contemplating the long-term consequences. Or maybe drugs or alcohol impaired your choice.

Now facing criminal charges, you feel overwhelmed. What’s going to happen to you and your family. Your mind imagines worst case scenarios. Will you lose your job? Will you go to jail? Will you be able to support your family? Will you lose the security you’ve created for yourself?

I will help you maneuver these obstacles as well as represent you in the courtroom. I take a holistic approach in working with clients. It is important to look at the whole as we address the legal charges you face. With sound legal advice we will get things moving in the right direction for you.

My Philosophy

Every case is unique and needs thorough investigation. From the moment I’m hired, I’ll be an advocate for you and will build the strongest case I can with the evidence available.

I regularly work with investigators and experts in the fields of medicine, accident reconstruction and forensics. It is through this process we can determine the best approach for your case.

Most cases do not go to trial. Through negotiation, often a favorable plea agreement can be achieved. However, for those times when an appropriate resolution cannot be reached, I will zealously represent you in court.

Counsel That Respects You

My clients come from all walks of life. From CSU students, to professors, parents, business owners, employees, and repeat offenders in northern Colorado, I’ve represented them all. You’re worried, scared, and disappointed. Understandable. I’m here to help. You will be treated with the respect you deserve. I’ll help you find a solution that protects your rights and gives you the opportunity to move forward. I encourage you not to beat yourself up over this. You’re a good person that made a bad choice. Don’t let this case label you.

Strict Colorado domestic violence law has wide-ranging penalties

Prosecutors in Colorado treat accusations of domestic violence seriously. Even a charge can affect contact with children, pending custody determinations in a family court setting and possession of firearms used for hunting. The legal definition of domestic violence is the “act or threatened act of violence upon a person with whom the actor is or has been […]

Obama Set to Expand Clemency for Drug Offenses

Last year, Attorney General Eric Holder made news with an announcement that he had directed federal prosecutors to take steps to avoid charging certain drug crime suspects under provisions that would lead to long mandatory minimum sentences in the event of a conviction. This directive, which was aimed to help first-time drug offenders without ties to organized […]

Colorado sees an uptick in heroin use

Heroin use in Colorado, which for many years was on the decline in the state and across the nation, is once again regaining popularity in the Centennial State, according to recent statistics. According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, about 5.1 percent of Colorado’s population abused painkillers in 2012. This […]

Colorado changing its Ignition Interlock Laws

Many states have mandatory ignition interlock laws. They require individuals who lose their driver’s license because of an alcohol offense to install an interlock before reinstating their privilege to drive. The interlock device requires the motorist to provide a breath sample before the vehicle will start. Then, while driving the driver is randomly required to give additional breath […]

Colorado Law Enforcement conducts annual DUI campaign this Labor Day Weekend

The annual DUI campaign is happening again this Labor Day weekend (2016). In an effort to reduce drunk driving on our streets and highways, Colorado officers are participating in the Heat Is On Program through September 2 nd. A similar initiative was observed last year. According to the Journal-Advocate, the 2012 program resulted in over 1,400 […]

Colorado Enacts THC Driving Law

In 2012, Colorado voters passed Amendment 64. This Amendment grants the right to use recreational marijuana in the state. As a result, it is now legal to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and consume marijuana in a non-public setting. The Colorado legislature spent part of the 2013 session creating laws on how to legally purchase […]

Defending theft crimes – a look beyond the legal system

Theft crimes often have a mental health connection. Studies have shown that addictive/compulsive behaviors like those present in substance abuse cases are often seen in those who compulsively commit theft crimes such as shoplifting. For others, there may be some traumatic event that contributes to the urge to steal. Recognizing that theft is not just […]

Legalization of Colorado Marijuana

The 2012 election will go down in history. Not only will it be remembered for the close race between President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney, it will stand out as the year two states – Colorado and Washington – passed initiatives to “decriminalize” the possession of small amounts of recreational marijuana. In 2006, a […]

Colorado Law Enforcement Crackdown on Drunk Driving

State and local law enforcement agencies across Colorado are joining forces this summer for a statewide drunk driving crackdown known as “100 Days of Heat.” The intensified DUI enforcement campaign occurs each year between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the time of year when alcohol-related accidents tend to occur with greater frequency in Colorado. To […]

Colorado Legislature Will Reconsider THC Limits for Drivers

As the Colorado legislature returns to session in 2012, it appears lawmakers will reconsider once again the issue of a THC per se law, similar to the alcohol per se law already in place. Last year a bill was considered that would have made it a crime for a person with 5 or more nanograms […]
